About VLMP Online Data Entry

In 2010 we will be piloting Online Data Entry as an option for volunteers in the following regions:

• Aroostook County
• Cumberland County
• Hancock County
• Piscataquis County
• Waldo County
• York County
• Rangeley Lake Heritage Trust

Based on how it goes this year we hope to expand to other regions in 2011.

About VLMP Online Data Entry

We are piloting a project for volunteers to enter their 2010 lake data online. If you are interested, the only requirement for participating is to have access to a computer with internet access. Participation is totally optional, so if you have luddite leanings or no internet access, carry on and send in your forms as usual.

Background
We are occasionally asked by volunteers if they can enter their data online. While this sounds like a simple request, we have been reluctant to move rapidly towards online data entry as our current system of data entry is fairly efficient and the process has built in QA/QC checks and double checks. Over the past three years we have been gradually developing an online data entry website and are now seeking volunteers to test it out.

Project Goals

• In the past your data has been entered by staff and volunteers at the VLMP office. One of the goals of this project is to reduce staff time entering data.
• Another goal is to enhance QA/QC. Volunteers entering their own data may find themselves paying closer attention to how the data is entered on the paper forms. We are all guilty of occasionally omitting a field. Hopefully, going online to enter data will reduce the number of times when your phone rings and you are asked “Do you recall if it was sunny or cloudy when you took your Secchi reading on May 21?”
• We hope to provide better access to your data. Volunteers entering data online will have the ability to download and save their data as an Excel file.
