Having been fortunate enough to spend most summers of my life “messing about in boats” on Wesserunsett Lake, I’m glad to help protect the lake for the benefit of my two daughters and future generations.
For the past three years, I have enjoyed assisting my father Will Reid in monitoring Wesserunsett Lake for water clarity, dissolved oxygen, and total phosphorus. As Regional Coordinator for Franklin and Somerset Counties, I am also pleased to be part of VLMP’s critical efforts to conserve other Maine lakes. This work seems more crucial than ever as our lakes become increasingly strained by development and overuse.
In addition to helping with VLMP’s state-wide conservation efforts, I am working locally with Wesserunsett Lake Association to protect a 68-acre parcel of land that sits in the midst of our lake’s sensitive marshes. I also serve as vice president of the lake association and chair the invasive aquatic plant committee. These activities keep me immersed in local conservation issues.
As Ratty puts it in The Wind in the Willows, I can think of “nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
